About Thirsk Located in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, the town of Thirsk has an estimated population of 5,000. Known as the birth place of Thomas Lord and the home of famous author James Herriot, the location has a rich history. Settlements here can be traced back as early as 500 BC. Thirsk is also known for its involvement with the murder of Henry Percy, the 4th Earl of Northumberland, during the War of the Roses.
In more recent years the town has been famed for being the home of author and veterinarian James Herriot or James Alfred Wright as he was also known.
